Spirit Pub Company, the managed operator, is set to re-open a former Orchid Group pub under Spirit’s managed concept Flaming Grill. The Bear in Tilehurst, Berkshire, has been closed for three years and is expected to re-open in February 2012 after a £500k refurbishment. It’s set to become the third pub to be converted from Spirit’s leased estate to the Flaming Grill concept. The Travellers Rest in Hartlepool opened in September, also following a £500k investment, and the Ring O’Bells in Loughborough is due to open on 10 December after a £450,000 refurbishment. Orchid operated the pub as the Bear & Dragon from 2006 until 2008, when the company went into administration and the lease reverted back to Spirit. The £500k investment at the Bear, which specialised in Thai food under Orchid, will include a new bar, kitchen equipment and furniture and new fittings, as well as a new name. Spirit, which demerged from Punch Taverns in August, plans to convert a number of its 500 leased pubs to its managed brands over the coming months and years.
