Around 26 pubs in the UK are being closed down each month, according to Camra. The group has launched the Community Pubs Foundation in an attempt to protect venues from being turned into homes, restaurants, offices or shops, or demolished. Camra said the loss of a community pub cold have a negative impact on the "local economy, community and tourism". Mike Benner, Camra’s chief executive, said pubs provided a safe environment for friends and family to relax and enjoy each other's company. "We ask those who are seeking to demolish a pub or convert a pub for financial gain to pause and spare a thought for the effect this will have in the local community," he said.
