Cains Beer Company, the brewer and pub operator, is seeking a new director of retail to maximise returns from its ongoing refurbishment programme. Sudarghara Dusanj, the group’s chief executive, said that he was looking for someone with experience in the pub retail sector of managed houses. The new director, who will replace Alan Mordue who is leaving the company, will be responsible for five business development managers. The group, which has around 92 pubs, said it had completed the refurbishment of three of its sites, with a further 30 further premises earmarked for rebranding as part of a £5m investment programme. Sudarghara said despite being cautious about the outlook for 2008 following the reporting of the group’s interim results last month, he was positive about the medium to long-term future of the company. He said that Cains was not currently in acquisitive mode, but was focusing instead on integrating the business through the refurbishment programme. In April, Cains reported a pre-tax loss of £2.8m and an 11% fall in like-for-like sales at its pub business for the 14 months to 28 October.
