More than 400 would be MPs have now signed up to the British Beer & Pub Association’s (BBPA) Back the Pub campaign. The BBPA said that since Monday of last week, 100 parliamentary candidates had signed up to the pledge. The pledge calls on government, industry, local authorities and others to work together to support British pubs as part of efforts to enhance community life and promote economic recovery. Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, welcomed the support and said: “In the last two years, beer tax has increased by 26% whilst over 4,000 community pubs have closed at the cost of more than 40,000 jobs.”
