Luke Johnson and Ian Eldridge, currently underbidders for the PizzaExpress chain, were told to push off when they gatecrashed a leaving bash for staff at Kettners, in London, according to the Times City Diary.

The newspaper claimed the two tried to ingratiate themselves by paying for the drinks but revellers were not having it.

The party had been arranged to see off three people who had been fired with 48 years' service between them. Executive directors were banned from the party.

Staff reminded them of the letter that 20 senior managers had sent threatening to resign if they ever took control.
