United Spirits, which is owned by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya, has confirmed that it is considering selling its 49% stake in whisky distiller Whyte & Mackay to help reduce its debts. The group told the Bombay stock exchange that the sale of its stake in the Glasgow-based firm was one of several options being considered. United Breweries Group, Mallya’s holding company, acquired Whyte & Mackay in 2007 for £595m. The group is looking to pay down debts of about £2.5bn.
