The video store chain Blockbuster is to start offering wine, lager and other alcoholic drinks to customers who call in to rent a copy of the latest release.

Viacom, which owns Blockbuster, says the move into alcoholic drink comes after a successful trial at its store in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

Blockbuster said: "The ultimate aim is to widen the service still further." It has launched several promotional deals combining alcohol purchase and movie rental, including one where, for a limited period, customers can pick up any rental, including new releases, with a bottle of wine or four cans of Stella Artois for £5.99.
