UK unemployment rose by 114,000 between June and August to reach a 17-year high of 2.57 million, according to new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The new figures showed that the jobless total for 16 to 24-year-olds also hit a record high of 991,000 in the period. The ONS said the unemployment rate increased to 8.1% in the period, while the jobless rate for 16 to 24-year-olds rose to 21.3%. The number of people out of work and claiming benefits rose 17,500 to 1.6 million in September.
