Cheyenne Spur Steak & Grill, the South African restaurant chain, is expanding in the UK with its seventh site, set to open in Newry, Northern Ireland during the last week of July. The group, which is managed by Pierre Van Tonder and has 340 outlets in South Africa, will open the 180 cover restaurant in the Quays Shopping Centre in County Down. This month the company has also opened a 160 cover restaurant in the Lakeside Shopping Centre and its first company owned venture in the new 02, the former Millennium Dome. Spur, which also has outlets in Australia, New South Wales and several African countries, is in negotiations regarding two or three further sites in the UK. Van Tonder, managing director of Spur, told M&C Report: “We are now concentrating on the UK. We have had to go through a period of learning with our franchisees to understand the discipline of the foodservice market in the UK. “We can see the opportunity in the casual dining sector in the UK for the growth of Spur, but we know that competition is very fierce.” The company, which opened its first restaurant in the UK six years ago in Staines, plans to rollout the brand, but will tweak the menu and design depending on the location.
