Shabby pub décor and crowded, dirty and noisy bars are linked to greater violence and drunkenness, according to Edinburgh academic Professor Martin Plant. In a recent paper, the professor, who is the former head of the Alcohol Research centre at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, claims that councils should take his findings into account when renewing licences.
