The future of the River Cafe, in Hammersmith, is in the balance because the landlord wants to increase the £87,000 rent to more than £100,000 plus an extra amount linked to turnover. The property’s owner would throw in an extra 1,500 sq ft of space as part of a deal but Lady Rogers and Rose Gray, the joint restaurant proprietors could be forced to sell. It is understood Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Pierre Koffman and Marco Pierre White are potential buyers. Ramsay is thought to remain frontrunner. Although Lady Rogers denied the restaurant was for sale, Ramsay confirmed he had been approached. The irony is that the landlord is the pension fund of the Richard Rogers Partnership, Lady Roger’s husband’s business. The pension fund trustees have employed a firm of surveyors, Berkeley Simmons Davis, to handle negotiations over a new lease to avoid any conflict of interest. The Times 10/09/05 page 3
