Health secretary John Reid has demanded publicans and restaurateurs come up with plans to phase in smoking restrictions. The Observer says it is the first step towards a blanket ban across Britain. The hospitality industry supports a phased strategy based on a Norwegian model that has just reached finality. This stipulated that 25% of all tables in bars and restaurants must be non-smoking. The country increased this to 50%, then 75% and finally an outright ban over 15 years. Greene King is rolling out smoke-free pubs in the belief a ban is inevitable in the future.
