Gas-fired patio heaters are disastrous for the environment, according to British Gas’s Energy Efficiency Manager Jeremy Parsons. Many pubs are using the heaters since the smoking bans came into force to make life more comfortable for smokers banished to beer gardens and patios. Over half of Scotland’s pubs have bought the heaters and England is set to follow suit. Each heater produces about 4 tonnes of CO2 per year – around two thirds of an average household’s emissions and as much as a 4x4. The effect of the heaters could conceivably stop the UK from achieving its Kyoto commitments by 2012. Mr Parsons advises using carbon-neutral heaters such as wood-burning braziers.
