Pub drinkers fear that health and safety rules might result in a ban on pub glasses in favour of plastic beakers. A growing number of police forces are pressing for a ban on glasses in the hope of reducing injuries caused when they are used as weapons in fights. Some 37 towns and local councils are thought to be considering the move. The pub industry is accusing the authorities of a “nanny state” mentality. The British Beer and Pub Association thinks pubs may feel pressurised into complying with the band because they will be afraid of losing their licences if they refuse.
