Independent researchers behind the Government’s licensing reforms have been in the pay of brewing bosses, The Mail on Sunday claims. The newspaper says Dr Peter Marsh, director of the Social Issues Research Centre, who has advised the government on reform, has worked for dozens of different pub, restaurant, nightclub and brewing companies and the Portman Group and the British Beer and Pub Association. It says while his think-tank is non-profit making, the lucrative corporate work involving both brewing industry and Government contracts is conducted under the name of MCM Research. Marsh works closely with Kate Fox, described as a pop-anthropologist and author of a light-hearted guide to pub etiquette. The newspaper asked Marsh about any potential conflict of interest but said the Government did not see that as a problem. Fox was unavailable for comment.
