John Penrose has stepped down as tourism and heritage minister for the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). Penrose was appointed as tourism minister in 2010 and has left amongst a cabinet reshuffle and as the Olympics and Paralympics come to a close. No immediate replacement has been announced, raising concerns over whether a tourism minister position will continue. Martin Couchman, deputy chief executive at the British Hospitality Association, said: “We are extremely disappointed that John Penrose has stepped down - he was a great supporter of the tourism industry. We would be extremely concerned if this indicated any downgrading of tourism in the DCMS's list of priorities.”
