Tim Martin has slammed the growing number of financiers who buy thousands of pubs, load them with debt and pocket the value in dividends, leaving little room for investing in the core business. He singles out Robert Tchenguiz, who is trying to buy Mitchells&Butlers, and accuses him of knowing nothing about pubs. All he has proved, argues Martin, is that he can "run them badly".
