Marks & Spencer has plans to open a chain of M&S Kitchens, upmarket cafés for ladies who lunch, weary shoppers and friends meeting up after work. The first, next to the M&S store in Canterbury's Whitefriars Shopping Centre, will seat 60 with another 20 covers on pavement tables. Marketing “whizzkid” Steven Sharp says it will be a "modern, stylish café environment" bringing "the quality and freshness of M&S food to a wider audience". M&S opened a full-service restaurant in its Newcastle store earlier this month and has installed Café Revive, its in-store self-service brand, in 210 outlets. It has delis with counter seats in four stores and 12 Hot Food To Go takeaways. Sharp says M&S Kitchen, which will be run by catering firm Compass, is "for now a one-store trial" but if it proves popular hundreds more could open across the country.
