The man behind Indian Zing, the London Indian restaurant that is a favourite of Michael Winner, is to open a second site. Manoj Vasaiker has taken the leasehold interest of a former Antony Worrall Thompson restaurant, The Barnes Grill on Rocks Lane in Barnes and intends to open it as Indian Zilla The 2,380 sq ft restaurant – which Vasiaker told M&C Report will feature a shorter menu - is set to reopen on August 15, Indian Independence Day. Vasaiker acquired the site via Selsian, the leisure property consultants headed up by Steve Bagatti. The site has been obtained for a nil premium and on a rent of £35,000 per annum. The original Indian Zing, which opened in King Street, Hammersmith, offered: “The greatest Indian food I have ever eaten”, according to the influential reviewer Winner and has also won praise from Fay Maschler. The Barnes Grill was one of a clutch of pub restaurants that were shut when Worrall Thompson’s AWT Restaurants went into administration in February 2009. At the time, the chef and entrepreneur, said: It’s pretty dire, really. People have gone back to the way that they ate in the 1970s. “They go out on Friday or Saturday nights and for Sunday lunch, or on special occasions.”
