Tim Hortons is flying the flag for Wendy's International with preliminary first quarter same-store sales in Canada to date up about 10%.

Sales in US branches of the coffee and fresh baked goods chain are up about 9.5%.

Tim Hortons' success is a stark contrast to the burger outlets where American same store sales are up only 1%.

The company expects intense competition will continue to focus on pricing.

It plans to increase the number of outlets under both brand names.

Wendy's will report its financial results on May 2.
