Wine producers in France's Bordeaux area are dividing into the "haves" and the "have-nots". While 2005 prices for the select 20 to 30 elite labels smashed all records, the majority are struggling with declining prices. Over-production means some producers are selling at Eu800 a barrel, which works out at less than one euro a bottle. There are plans to solve the "wine lake" problem by uprooting around 400,000 hectares of vines over the next five years. But although the "haves" are in favour of the plan, small producers are clinging tenaciously to their precious vines. The Business 16/07/06 page 7
