A planned review of the smoking ban has been put on hold by the new government. The ban, which has its third anniversary today, had been set to be reviewed at this stage by the former Labour government. But a Department of Health spokeswoman said yesterday: “There are no plans to review the smoking ban at the present time.” The Guild of Master Victuallers, which had earlier urged the new government to ditch the smoking ban review, welcomed the news. John Madden, GMV chief executive, said: “We are pleased that the current government doesn’t appear to be carrying out a review, so we don‘t expect to see any changes to the legislation."
