Bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs in France will have to display no smoking signs from January 2 with £50 fines for anyone caught lighting up. Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot has vowed a "zero tolerance" approach to smokers but many claim the ban will strike a mortal blow to the country's cherished cafe culture. Bar owners will be allowed to install sealed-off, well-ventilated smoking cabins but these must not exceed 20% of a premise's surface area. Others are putting up gas heaters on terraces for smokers.
