Food fraud is growing in the UK, as a result of criminals taking advantage of the increasing popularity of organic products and weak food laws. The first report from the Food Fraud Task Force, which was set up this year as part of the Food Standards Agency, found that illegal businesses are selling factory farmed meat as organic. The research showed that low fines handed out by courts lead to weaker deterrence and mean that fraudsters can derive commercial benefits from the illegal activity. The Task Force called for better co-operation between the enforcement agencies dealing with fraud. It will publish its final report into fraud next year.
