First Class Teas, a new tea shop concept, has opened its first site in Cambridge, which includes both a retail zone and a seated area for consumption. The tea shop, which is privately owned by William Cartwright-Hignett, allows customers to try a range of teas before buying them. The site just off Market Square has covers for up to 25 people and serves cold snacks and sandwiches as well as pots of tea for a total average spend of about £6. Customers can also buy a wide variety of teas, which are weighed and then packaged to take away. Cartwright-Hignett said: “We offer a unique product as we are the only place in Cambridge specialising in leaf teas. “The location is ideal as we attract a mixture of students and affluent locals.” He hopes to open two or three shops by the end of 2007, but the number of sites will depend upon the success of the Cambridge branch and the locations found.
