The alleged fraudulent finger-in-Wendy’s-chilli scam resulted in the burger chain losing an estimated $2.5m (£1.3m), a fall in first-quarter profits and the laying off of dozens of employees who worked at the northern Californian franchises. Anna Ayala, from Las Vegas, who claimed she had bitten into the digit at one of the San Jose branches, is being held on $500,000 (£270,000) bail. Police believe they have identified the owner of the digit – a friend of the woman’s husband who lost it in an industrial action last year. Ayala faces charges of attempted grand theft because of the effect her claim had on sales at the group. The Times 14/05/05 page 51
