Kingfisher tycoon Vijay Mallya, who runs a £4bn empire and calls himself the Sir Richard Branson of Asia, has revealed that his father called him a dunce when he was 15 and told him to "buck up" at school. He is now planning to launch a secondary flotation of the spirits arm of his United Breweries business on the London Stock Exchange and is currently deciding on UK advisers for the float. Kingfisher beer, in which Scottish & Newcastle owns a minority stake, has made him India's largest brewer and his total spirits portfolio has overtaken Pernod Ricard to become number two in volume terms after Diageo. The drinks market in India has had 30 to 40% year-on-year growth since 2000 and Mallya predicts that young people in India will soon become the world's largest consumers of Scotch.
