Hundreds of pub landlords are planning a "Day of Defiance" when the No Smoking law comes into effect on July 1. Some publicans have vowed to continue breaking the law if customers want it, and the ban is already facing three High Court challenges. Nick Haven, who runs The Swan pub in Bolton, Lancs, has emerged as the figurehead for the rebels. He says the protest "against dictatorship" is still growing and argues it is about the "freedom to choose". Nathan Wells, operations director for JD Wetherspoon, estimates that the pub chain has already spent nearly £1m to create outdoor smoking shelters. And there is much fury over the "Orwellian" tactics being drawn up to enforce the ban. But Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt insists that banning smoking in public places is a "triumph for public health". The Sunday Telegraph 03/06/07 page 16
