Orient Express Hotels Group, which owns Hotel Cipriani, in Venice, Italy, has launched a writ against Mayfair, London restaurant Cipriani because of the “confusion” the venue’s name has created. Financial Mail says the hotel group is basing the writ on its ownership of the Cipriani community trademark in Europe for hotels and restaurants, even though the Cipriani family, which controls the London restaurant, opened the Venice hotel in 1959. Cipriani USA said the family had never renounced the right to its name, although it had permitted the Venice hotel to continue using it. Financial Mail 31/12/06 page 1
