The brands report has put cider in the top 10 best-selling drinks sold in pubs in England and Wales for the first time, pushing out Budweiser.

The report commissioned from AC Neilsen by The Publican newspaper, attributes the rapid changes to efforts by the licensed trade to broaden its appeal to young people and women for the success of Bulmer's Strongbow.

Other drinks such as vodka, rum, Tennessee whiskey and wine have secured places in the top 20.

The sales of the top 10 brands are worth nearly £4.27bn a year up 4% on last year.

A separate report compiled for Scotland shows the dominant lagers are still holding their lead despite a challenge from ready-mixed premium packaged spirits.
