The Campaign for Real Ale is calling for the resurrection of the Fair Beer Tax Action Group.

It wants the trade to unite and launch a national campaign to get duty rates on beers, wines and spirits cut.

Last week's Budget included a duty-freeze but the trade says this is insufficient.

Industry surveys have shown bootlegging is still increasing because of high duty rates.

The chancellor of the exchequer, Gordon Brown, raised a glimmer of hope when he revealed he would look at the possibility of introducing a sliding scale of duty for small brewers.
