Café & Tapas, the London-based, Spanish café and coffee shop chain, has been placed into administration. Launched in the UK in 2009, the company is a subsidiary of the Spanish company Café & Te, which operates over 160 sites in Spain under its eponymous brand. Alex Cadwallader and Neil Bennett from Leonard Curtis have been appointed joint administrators to the UK subsidiary, which operates sites in Bankside, Kings Cross and Piccadilly. Cadwallader said: “The brand and the business model has been and continues to be very successful in Spain, and the UK company had hoped to replicate that. However, this has not proved to be the case despite significant support from the shareholders.” A fourth site operates under the coffee and authentic Spanish and Mediterranean food concept in Regent Street is owned by a different company and is not in administration.
