New legislation which would mean gay bars having to admit straight customers while hotels could be prosecuted for banning gays from sharing a room may now be put on hold. Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly, a devout Catholic, wants to water down the measures following protests from religious organisations. She says there are "difficult issues" involved. Now a major row is brewing with other Cabinet members led by Education Secretary Alan Johnson. The proposed measures would ban discrimination over the provision of all services and goods.
