Record levels of champagne are being imported into Britain, making the UK the top export market for the drink for the ninth year running. The Comite Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne has released figures showing that nearly 35 million bottles were shipped to Britain in 2004. It puts Britain far ahead of the second and third biggest markets for champagne, with the US importing 20.2 million bottles and Germany 11.5 millions bottles. Shipments to the UK have increased by 40% since 2000. CIVC said Britons are also trading up which champagne they drank as well as experimenting with different styles and vintage champagnes.
