David Blunkett, home secretary and Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary, met drinks and entertainment industry representatives last week to discuss measures to curtail binge-drinking. Blunkett told a Local Government Association meeting in Bournemouth yesterday that he wanted the business community to provide extra funding to reduce drink-fuelled neighbourhood crime by paying towards local wardens and community support officers. The extra money could be raised through a levy on the business rate. He said it was a way around the difficulty of leisure and alcohol-related businesses benefiting from the happy hour culture.
