British Airways may replace its inflight meal supplier, Gate Gourmet, with a new operator, possibly a consortium of suppliers. Tenders for catering contracts at Heathrow and Gatwick will be decided by the end of the year. Although Gate Gourmet’s contract is set to run until 2010, British Airways is moving early to allow any new operator time to set up necessary infrastructure. The £1.8bn ten-year contract is one of the biggest catering contracts available in the UK. British Airways will be looking to avoid future industrial disputes that put its food supply in jeopardy, and is also said to be looking for “efficiency savings” which will cut the cost of individual meals.
