Sainsbury’s got caught on the hop when security codes that granted discounts of up to 75% off online alcohol purchases were published on the internet. The Daily Telegraph reports that tens of thousands of people were thought to have used the codes to buy beer and wine in bulk. Some claimed they placed up to seven separate orders receiving £450 of alcohol for about £180. The buying-spree started when the supermarket chain sent e-vouchers to loyal online customers offering between £2 and £12 off orders of more than £60. Each of the vouchers came with a code and instructions that only one could be used per order but the codes were posted on money-saving websites and when people tried all the codes together they found they all worked. Sainsbury’s has discontinued the e-voucher system. The Daily Telegraph 16/12/06 page 7
