The cost of advertising to prepare the public and businesses for next summer's anti-smoking laws will top £12m between now and July. It is believed ministers have sanctioned the investment to appease the pub and hospitality industry. There is strong opposition in the trade to the ban, which outlaws smoking in pubs, clubs, workplaces, private venues and any "substantially-enclosed public spaces". The Observer 03/12/06 pages 20 & 21
