Boddingtons brewery workers in Manchester want the European Union to stop Interbrew moving beer production to Wales. They claim that adverts describing the brew as "The Cream of Manchester" link it formally to the city and make any transfer impossible. As a precedent, they point out that the EU does not allow champagne to be produced anywhere other than the French region bearing its name. And Cheshire cheese can only be made in Cheshire. Union chief Franny Joyce insists the Strangeways brewery has a 226-year heritage link with Manchester. The Mail on Sunday 21/11/04 (Financial Mail) page 5
