The government is reported to be reconsidering plans to ban alcohol on public transport. The proposals had been criticised as unworkable by train operators and met with scepticism by police forces around the country. John Reid, the defence secretary, yesterday denied that the government was planning to bring in the ban, saying instead that it had merely been discussed. However, Reid told the BBC's Sunday AM programme that he wanted a balance between "rights and responsibilities", with people able to have a civilised drink at whatever time they wanted, but without people being "abusive through drink".
