The Treasury’s notion that the European Commission’s proposal to scrap all restrictions on the amount of alcoholic drinks coming into Britain would destroy businesses and rob billions of pounds from public services, is nonsensical, says The Sunday Telegraph’s leader column. It says the criminals who import enormous quantities of drink to Britain for illegal sale only profit because of the vastly indefensible gulf between our duties and those in the rest of Europe. The column says that as for the charge that the plans would rob billions form the Treasury, it would surely make a refreshing change from the Treasury so shamelessly robbing us.
