A court in Norway has ruled that smoking at work is a basic human right. Since 1 January, public employees in Levanger have been banned from smoking during work hours, both on or off town property, and even when they are on breaks, business trips abroad or travelling in their own cars on business. Regional officials declared the move illegal as it violated the right to a private life as defined by the European Convention on Human Rights. Despite the ruling, Norway is set to impose a ban on smoking in public places on 1 June.
