A Swiss company is plans to begin selling smokeless cigarettes early next year. Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products has invented NicStic, a cigarette-sized device that uses a rechargeable heating coil and a nicotine core to deliver smokers the taste and sensation of smoking without the smoke, tar or the variety of toxic chemicals associated with the habit. The company is hoping to take advantage of the mounting anti-smoking legislation gradually coming into force across the globe, even in Switzerland, one of the more smoker-friendly countries in Western Europe. It enables, according to the company, "Enjoyment without discrimination". However, the product has drawn fire from the Swiss Institute for Alcohol and Drug Prevention. The Institute’s Janine Messerli told news website Swissinfo: "Nicotine is what makes smoking addictive, and so this product changes nothing."
