EC officials have ordered the government to put an end to Britain's pints and instead serve beer in litres. A Brussels spokesman said they had a legal obligation to fix a date "as soon as possible" and added: "They are running behind on this." The development is said to have triggered panic in Whitehall. Sources fear it would be "political suicide" to announce that beer will in future be sold in 568ml glasses. But unless Britain acts, the government could ultimately be hauled before the European Court in Strasbourg. Miles will also be abolished in favour of kilometres, and the days of measuring land in acres also look doomed. The Observer 14/08/05 page 3 The Sunday Times 28/08/05 page 10
