Research from the University of California has found that people who drink close to the Government-promoted "safe" limits of alcohol are twice as likely to develop hardened coronary arteries as those who abstain. The 15-year study of more than 3,000 33-45-year-olds also showed binge-drinking doubled the build-up of plaques in the inner lining of the arteries to the heart. The Department of Health advises men should not drink more than three to four units a day and women two to three units. The Daily Telegraph 12/03/05 page 6
