The number of people claiming jobless benefit rose last month for the first time since January. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) the number of people claiming unemployment benefit increased by 2,300 in August, bringing to an end a six-month period in which it had fallen by more than 150,000. Despite the increased claimant count the number of people unemployed in the UK fell by 8,000 to 2.47 million in the three months to July, figures show. This meant the overall UK unemployment rate remained at 7.8%, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
