The Department of Media, Culture and Sport is considering lifting the ban on alcohol consumption during football matches, at least in executive boxes.

The DCMS said that football clubs would go through "a rigorous process" before being granted a licence by their local authority.

Football clubs are said to be confident of identifying troublemakers by relying on CCTV cameras in grounds.

The news comes just over a month since the Home Office released figures showing a 70% increase in arrests of football fans for violent disorder.
