The European Union (EU) warned the drinks industry to stop marketing products to young drinkers or it would legislate. Markos Kyprianou, EU commissioner for health and consumer protection, said the industry would be given the opportunity to self-regulate but if that failed action would be taken. He is particularly critical of companies that produce "alcopops" which critics believe are targeted at young drinkers. He will also consider banning beer companies sponsoring sports teams, including Formula One. The Wine & Spirit Association said self-regulation worked well in Britain and the threat of alcopops was exaggerated. The Daily Telegraph 05/03/06 page 15
