Edinburgh has been crowned the UK’s best city by readers of The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph newspapers. The city beat London, Bath and York in a poll taken by NOP of over 25,000 people for the broadsheets’ annual Travel Awards. Edinburgh’s history, festival and Hogmanay celebrations were cited as top attractions. In addition, Edinburgh’s Gleneagles was voted best British hotel, seeing off competition from the likes of the capital’s Savoy. The winners’ ceremony was held at a glitzy reception at London’s Royal Opera House. Other bests on the night included New Zealand as favourite holiday destination and Cape Town as favourite foreign city. In September, Edinburgh also scooped the best city award at the Guardian’s travel awards.
