The Government launches a national "Christmas alcohol blitz" next week. It comes at a time when Britain has established a reputation for itself as the "drunk man of Europe", according to a feature in the Telegraph magazine. The feature examines three initiatives that are trying to reverse the dramatic increase in underage drinking. One of them is Operation Briard which involves officers confiscating drink from under-18s and dispersing groups in the centre of Manchester. The magazine describes a 17-year-old girl lying in her own vomit at the back of Brannigan’s Nightclub in Norwich. Drinking-related injuries account for 70% of weekend hospital admissions in the city.
